I know the SX starts under the first S Cutlass, but what is the proper distance under? I see pictures where is is 1/4" to 1/2" below and some where it is almost touching the Cutlass emblem.

To compliment the other replies, here are screenshots taken from 1970 Assembly Manual. One is just a closeup of the main page. Notice the left edge of the SX badge starts below and between the "A" and first "S" in Cutlass. The plants were never perfect at mounting emblems, therefore it's common practice to mount the badge immediately below the first "S".

I am pretty sure the factory had a jig to pierce the fenders for all the different emblems. They did not drill. Therefore, they should be fairly consistent from car to car.
